  8. PalPal is a simple little pop-up utility designed to quickly and easily
  9. change the 16 color VGA palette. I decided to write it one day because I was
  10. tired of looking at the same colors on my word processor and didn't want to
  11. go through a complicated menu for selecting new colors. With PalPal you can
  12. adjust the palette from the DOS prompt then use the new color scheme across
  13. several of your favorite programs.

  15. The controls on PalPal are quite intuitive once you have used it for a few
  16. minutes. Put PalPal on your path somewhere, then you can run it from any DOS
  17. prompt. First select which of the 16 colors to change with the "<" and ">"
  18. keys (or the "D" and "F" keys), notice the pointer. Then select either the
  19. Red, Green, or Blue hue with the left and right arrows. Finally, adjust the
  20. actual color with the up and down arrows keys. If the control key is held
  21. along with the up and down arrows, the Red Green and Blue hues are adjusted
  22. simultaneously. The "w" key toggles whether hues wrap-around or bottom-out.
  23. With "w"rap on the hue will go from 63 back to 0 if the up arrow is pressed.
  24. The "s" key toggles sounds on and off.

  26. Background color (normally black) is adjusted on color #0. All 16 colors are
  27. shown side-by-side so you can check the contrast. The setting for each color
  28. is shown like this, for example: 32 Red 55. The first number is the initial
  29. value that was there before you started fooling with it and the second value
  30. is your new setting. The new color is shown as adjustments are made. The
  31. value runs from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 63 for each of 3 hues, for
  32. each of 16 colors, which gives you something like a million different
  33. possible arrangements.

  35. PalPal features a single key ultraturbopseudoautomaxiantiquasineomegaomni
  36. randomizer algorithm. The randomizer searches for an esthetic color set with
  37. maximum contrast so no two colors shade each other out. Press ctrl-r or shift-R
  38. to set 16 all new colors; if "r" (small case) is pressed the single color you
  39. are on is randomized.

  41. Some programs will overwrite the existing palette and stubbornly install its
  42. own upon start-up. Try shelling out to DOS, adjusting the colors to your
  43. liking with PalPal, then EXIT back. Other programs will readily accept your
  44. new colors making it very easy to jazz things up a bit. PalPal is only three
  45. lines high so you can keep the program you're adjusting on the screen at the
  46. same time. PalPal won't work at all in windows; it is very autocratic about
  47. things like this.

  88.    different applications. Two sample palette files created by PalPal are
  89.    included with the ShareWare version. Try running PalZeez.COM from the DOS
  90.    prompt or PalIBM.COM which restores default colors.

  93.    are close to each other.
